Basic Snow Safety Tips
Snow and ice can change a Chicago-area journey quickly. Whether you are heading to an airport, a meeting or an evening event, prepare for the conditions along the whole route—not just outside your door.
Check conditions before you leave
Review the National Weather Service Chicago forecast and alerts, then check your airline or venue for schedule changes. NHTSA’s winter travel guidance advises checking weather and traffic reports, preparing for delays and considering postponement of nonessential travel when roads are in poor condition.
Keep the essentials with you
- Wear a winter coat, gloves and suitable footwear even if you expect a short walk between the building and the vehicle.
- Charge your phone and keep your pickup contact details available. Carry a charging cable for a longer trip.
- Keep necessary personal items in your hand luggage so they remain accessible if plans change.
Confirm the pickup and return plan
Check the pickup address, building entrance and a phone number where you can be reached. For an airport trip, provide the flight details and discuss the departure schedule with the transportation provider. If your flight, meeting or event changes, contact the provider promptly to review the arrangements.
Allow room for delays, and be prepared to adjust a nonessential journey. A reserved vehicle does not remove the effects of severe weather; road conditions can still delay or prevent travel.
